Behind the Scenes: Oasis Skateboard Factory

Amisha Patel

Imagine running a design studio and skateboard business instead of going to school? The talented kids at Toronto's Oasis Skateboard Factory get to do just that. OSF is an innovative reengagement program where kids earn high school credits by learning how to build skateboards and longboards, in addition to creating their own skate and streetwear brands.  We caught up with them on their field trip to New York to discuss a future collaboration.

Julia, one of the students, hand paints hoodies with a little bit of bleach that eats perfectly away at the fabric as the paint dries.

Behind the Scenes: Renegade Street Shoot in Harajuku

Amisha Patel

While walking through Yoyogi Park on the way to Meiji Shrine in Shibuya, I heard something strange coming from a group of young Japanese women - English. I stopped to chat with them. Hanako, a beautiful half-Kenyan, half-Japanese dancer, and Meg, an aspiring director/producer, had both spent time in the States before moving back to Tokyo. I decided to do a renegade photo shoot with them and their friend Azusa, a young designer, on the streets of Harajuku. - Amisha

We stopped random guys on Omotesando. They were good sports. Didn't even get to keep the hoodies.

Hitting the Streets: Tokyo, Japan

Amisha Patel

Tokyo is a city of endless inspiration and startling contrasts that makes New York seem far behind the times.  The design, architecture, food and artfulness of the Japanese people make it easy to get lost in translation.  Thank god for google maps.
